Top Gun: Maverick Release Pushed To December Due To COVID-19

So summer movie season is canceled, right? News has just come in that another high-profile release is vacating its summer release date due to COVID-19. Paramount Pictures has decided to shift Top Gun: Maverick to December amid coronavirus concerns.

The sequel was set to open on June 24 & will now take flight on December 23. The decision comes as theaters remain closed globally as the world deals with COVID-19. While AMC CEO is optimistic they can open their doors by mid-June, studios and exhibitors are wary about how eager audiences will be to return to multiplexes after emerging from the global health crisis.

Top Gun: Maverick cost $150 million to make so Paramount really can’t risk the chance that the film will struggle during the summer as moviegoing will be in an easy place. This move follows other releases such as Mulan, A Quiet Place: Part II, Fast & Furious 9, Morbius, Ghostbusters: Afterlife & many other films that have delayed their releases due to the coronavirus. Christopher Nolan’s Tenet is so far staying out on July 17 as is Disney’s Jungle Cruise on July 24. Wonder Woman 1984, which originally was going to open June 5, was recently pushed to August 14.
