The Upside Scores Surprising Number One Debut

Aquaman was set to spend a fourth weekend at the top of the box office but The Upside pulled an upset and prevented the king of the sea from spending another week at number one.

The Upside grossed an estimated $19.5 million to claim the number one spot. The Upside is another example of a film that overcame bad reviews (40% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes) and occasionally pleased the general public. The Upside scored an “A” CinemaScore so word of mouth should be solid and with MLK weekend coming up, it may actually display some impressive legs heading into the holiday.

Aquaman falls to second place with an estimated $17.2 million, down 44.3% from last week. The film brings its domestic total to $287.8 million but the real story is its overseas performance. The film added $27.9 million from international territories and now brings its global take to $1.02 billion. Aquaman is the first film in the DC Extended Universe to top $1 billion globally and it ranks as the second largest DC adaptation behind only The Dark Knight Rises($1.0849 billion).

Debuting in third is A Dog’s Way Home with $11.3 million. The film performed pretty much in line with expectations and with a small $18 million budget, it should become a modest hit for the studio. The film received an “A-” CinemaScore and it could also benefit from the upcoming MLK weekend in terms of displaying legs.

In fourth, and fresh off its win at the Golden Globes, is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse with an estimated $9 million. The film dropped 31.4% and has a domestic tally of $147.7 million to date. Spider-Verse also added another $9.4 million internationally this weekend for a global take that now tops $300 million.

Rounding out the top five is Escape Room with $8.9 million. The film dropped an expected 51.2% which is typical of January horror titles. The film has grossed $32.4 million to date and even with the big drop, it’s still a success given its $9 million production budget.
