The Orville is on the move. It was announced during their panel at San Diego Comic-Con that the sci-fi dramedy from Seth MacFarlane will be moving from Fox to Hulu for its third season.
The reason for the move involves the production demands making it hard to deliver to network for its planned midseason debut. The series is admittedly ambitious and launched midseason for its second season for similar reasons. The series will now launch its third season on Hulu in late 2020 after being off the air for a year and a half. Hulu has been the SVOD home for the series for its first two seasons.
Moving The Orville, which is Disney-owned, allows it to air on a Disney-controlled platform. The series began its run as a straight to series pickup at Fox and was produced in-house by 20th TV. The studio officially became part of the Disney family earlier this year when the company’s $71.3 billion acquisition closed. With the move, Fox will no longer have to pay a licensing fee to air the show.
The Orville has performed admirably on Fox during its second season, doubling its 18-49 rating after seven days.
