The CW really wants their television adaptation of 1987’s Lost Boys to really work. After being in development for quite some time and even having a pilot shot last broadcast season which was ultimately rejected, the network has ordered a new pilot for the series which will be retooled and repackaged for consideration on the network.
Lost Boys, from Rob Thomas, creator of The CW’s iZombie and Veronica Mars, was originally developed back in 2016 with Thomas attached for the network and went to pilot last year with Tyler Posey and Kiele Sanchez attached. The plan last year called for it to be reshot and re-piloted off-cycle. Thomas will again co-write the script with Heather Mitchell (Still Star-Crossed), with Marcos Siega stepping in to direct the new pilot for last year’s helmer, Catherine Hardwicke. This will be the third shot at developing Lost Boys, the 1987 vampire movie that starred Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Jami Gertz, Corey Haim, and Corey Feldman.
Lost Boys joins a relatively minor pilot slate for the network due to the fact that The CW renewed virtually its entire current lineup, save the show that already announced their final seasons (Arrow, Supernatural and The 100). The network sent to of their pilots straight-to-series (the Walker, Texas Ranger reboot and Superman & Lois) and they put out formal pilot orders for Kung Fu, The Republic of Sarah & Maverick, a drama that is set in present-day America and finds the country under authoritarian rule. It revolves around the president’s daughter, whose world view and belief in her father are rocked on her first day at Georgetown. The CW also has two more backdoor/planted episode spinoffs from The 100 and Arrow. It’s going to be competitive for the remaining spots so this next stab at Lost Boys has to be top-notch to be considered for series.
