The Lion King Reigns Again As Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Becomes Quentin Tarantino’s Biggest Opening.

The weekend box office played out as expected with The Lion King maintaining the top spot as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood scores big for an original film during a summer that has been riddled with sequels and rehashes.

The Lion King stays number one for the second weekend in a row with a gross of $76.6 million. The film dropped 60% which is the largest drop of the recent live-action Disney offerings but before we spin this in a negative direction, it should be noted that coming off of an opening of $191.7 million, it’s not too surprising that the drop was a tad hefty since there was a huge rush factor to see it on opening weekend. The film has still grossed a staggering $351.8 million at the domestic box office and it added another $142.8 million from overseas territories to bring its worldwide total to $962.7 million. Disney will have another billion-dollar earner by the end of next weekend.

Debuting in second is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with $41 million. Box office tracking had the film in the $30 million range so this is a big win for Sony Pictures and original content. I know a lot came into play to make this one a winner (Tarantino, DiCaprio, Pitt, Robbie, great reviews) but during a summer that hasn’t seen much originality, it’s refreshing to have a film like this win over moviegoers. The $41 million opening is a career-best for Tarantino whose previous top opening was $38 million for Inglourious Basterds back in 2009. So where does it go from here? The film earned a “B” CinemaScore so it makes me wonder if it only won over fans of Tarantino which could lead to some questionable legs in the weeks ahead. Really won’t see the full picture until this weekend but the $90 million film is in good shape to make back its money and then some.

Sony finds itself in third as well with Spider-Man: Far From Home grossing $12.4 million. The film dropped 41.3% and brings its domestic total to $344.7 million. To go along with its domestic success, Far from Home topped $1 billion worldwide this weekend thanks to an additional $21 million overseas for an international gross that now stands at $692.4 million and a global tally topping $1.03 billion. The film is now the ninth Marvel Cinematic Universe film to top the billion-dollar mark.

In fourth we have Toy Story 4 still holding strong with a gross of $10.4 million. The film dropped 32.8% and continues a series of great holds since it opened six weeks ago. The domestic total is now at $396.2 million and internationally the animated feature added $19.4 million for an overseas gross totaling $522.3 million. The film’s global take now stands at $917.9 million.

Rounding out the top five is Crawl with $4 million. The film dropped 33.4% as it brings its domestic total to $31.5 million which makes it a bit of a modest hit, given its $13.5 million budget.
