The CW Fall 2019-20 Schedule: Wins Upfronts With Major Scheduling Changes

The CW has unveiled its 2019-20 Fall schedule and unlike like the other networks who presented during Upfronts this week, The CW is making significant changes to its scheduling.

Only four of the 12 timeslots on the fall schedule feature the same occupants they did last fall. The CW, despite not being one of the big four networks, has always had the most interesting Upfronts Presentation because they try new things with their schedule and they try to take chances.

Arrow, which launched the Arrowverse, and The Flash, its most popular spinoff, have never been paired together on the same night but that changes this fall. For Arrow’s final season, it’s heading to Tuesdays with The Flash, likely to give it the best exposure as it closes out its 8 season run.

Meanwhile, new drama Batwoman starring Ruby Rose is joining the Melissa Benoist starrer Supergirl on Sunday, with the latter sliding from 8 PM to 9 PM. The CW must be very confident in Batwoman because usually the veteran series is used as the lead-in but, in this case, Batwoman will lead into Supergirl.

Surprise season 2 renewal, All American, is moving from Wednesdays to Monday night and is being paired with Black Lightning. All American is being used as the lead-in here, another interesting move but maybe The CW is looking at how well All American is doing on Netflix and seeing that there could be viewership growth in season 2, much as was the case with Riverdale when it returned for is sophomore season after its first year was released on Netflix.

Riverdale is staying put on Wednesday night and is being used as a lead-in for new series, Nancy Drew. I’m a little surprised they didn’t pair it with its new spinoff, Katy Keene, but I’m sure that pairing will be used eventually, maybe even when the spinoff premieres midseason.

Thursday is the only night on the schedule that is left untouched. The final season of Supernatural will lead the night while Legacies follows for its season 2 return. Dynasty is staying put on Friday nights but is moving to 9 PM on the night. The second season of Charmed with lead Friday’s at 8 PM.

For the first time since its first season, DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow is being held for midseason. Also waiting in the wings are new drama Katy Keene, an offshoot from Riverdale, as well as returning In the Dark; Roswell, New Mexico; and The 100.
