The Crown is preparing for its royal exit. Netflix has announced that the popular and critically acclaimed series will end after season five.
It has also been confirmed that Imelda Staunton will take on the role of Queen Elizabeth II during season five. The news comes right after the premiere of season three and ahead of season four. Staunton has been rumored to take on the role of Queen Elizabeth II for a couple of months and the streamer confirmed the casting today. Unlike Claire Foy or Olivia Colman, she will, however, only play the role for one season.
Creator Peter Morgan had this to say about Staunton’s casting:
“I’m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty the The Queen for the fifth and final season, taking The Crown into the 21st century. Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman.”
Peter Morgan also want on to explain why the show will end with season five:
“At the outset I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons but now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop. I’m grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision.”
The Crown is one of the most popular series on Netflix and it has landed Claire Foy and Olivia Colman much awards attention in the process, as well as nods for some of the supporting cast. It is nice to see that Netflix is letting the show end on its own terms without dragging it all out.
