The LEGO Batman Movie Tops The Weekend Box Office

A sizeable trifecta of new wide releases went into battle at the weekend box office but The LEGO Batman Movie proved to be victorious over them all with a solid $55.6 million opening.

I actually thought this would open higher but I can see the film having considerable legs in the coming weeks. The film was tracking in the $60 million range (with some tracking it even higher) but a strong “A-” CinemaScore implies that the film will have some staying power and it’s pretty much the only kid friendly offering in theaters for the next few weeks.

Fifty Shades Darker had to settle for second place with a gross of $46.7 million. Looking ahead, while this opening is nearly $40 million less than 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey, that was to be expected and how it plays this week with Valentine’s Day on Tuesday and next weekend’s four-day holiday weekend will be the true test as Fifty Shades of Grey dipped a massive 74% in its second weekend while Darker should play a little more traditionally. What does that mean? Well, proportionally, Fifty Shades Darker’s opening compared to Fifty Shades of Grey is spot on when compared to the performance of Sex and the City to its sequel, which dropped 60% in its second weekend, ending its run just shy of $100 million, a number that would appear to be the bar to keep an eye domestically with $125 million looking like the ceiling for this release. Opening day liked this sequel more than the original believe it or not. The sequel earned a “B+” CinemaScore compared to the “C+” of the original. The overseas audiences also seemed to enjoy the film as it earned $100.1 million from 57  markets over the weekend.

Third place belongs to John Wick: Chapter 2 which is the true success story over the weekend with an impressive $30 million opening. This more than doubles the opening that the first film reached two years ago which shows the true power of being cult hit. The film received an “A-” CinemaScore which means opening day audiences liked what they saw. This is definitely going to be one to watch in the weeks ahead.
