The Terminator will be back in Terminator: Dark Fate and the sixth installment of the franchise (technically third since it’s ignoring all the sequels after Terminator 2) has finally entered box office tracking.
Early tracking has Terminator: Dark Fate opening to about $40 million+ when it opens on November 1. It’s very possible, and highly likely, that Dark Fate will beat the 3-day opening of 2003’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines ($44 million) which would be a franchise-best if it does. Working in the film’s favor, unlike the other sequels, is that it’s being billed as the direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day and James Cameron is returning to the franchise as a producer along with Linda Hamilton returning in her signature role as Sarah Connor. Throw in the franchise going back to its R-rated roots (the last two sequels have been PG-13) and there is potential for the brand to really get back on track.
Reviews will also play a factor and if they’re good, the film’s box office potential could exceed. The TV spot campaign is reportedly about to kick into high gear and they will definitely push the film as a return to form for the franchise, much like last year’s Halloween did as it also ignored all of the sequels after the 1978 original.
