Taika Waititi To Direct New Star Wars Film For Theatrical Release

Happy Star Wars Day! I guess the day wouldn’t be complete without some big Star Wars news and that comes courtesy of Taika Waititi officially being headed to a galaxy far, far away. The filmmaker behind Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit will direct and co-write a new Star Wars movie for theatrical release.

Joining Waititi on this journey is 1917 writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who will be co-writing the script with him. There were reports back in January that Waititi was being eyed for a Star Wars project but the buzz died down almost as soon as the rumor began. It looks like the deal was worked out right in time to be announced on “May The Fourth Be With You.”

There is no release date as of yet for the project and Waititi has a pretty full schedule as it is. Waititi, who won a screenwriting Oscar for Jojo Rabbit,  has already shot the upcoming soccer film Next Goal Wins and has Ragnarok followup Thor: Love and Thunder due out February 11, 2022.
