Sylvester Stallone Joins James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad

James Gunn’s already stacked cast for The Suicide Squad has added another big name to its roster. It has been announced that Sylvester Stallone has joined the ensemble cast of the film.

A representative for Stallone also confirmed the news to “Variety” and Gunn took to his Instagram page on Saturday to make the announcement, writing opposite a selfie of him and Stallone: “Always love working with my friend @officialslystallone & our work today on #TheSuicideSquad was no exception. Despite Sly being an iconic movie star, most people still don’t have any idea what an amazing actor this guy is.” You can check out the Instagram post below:

What remains unclear is what Stallone will actually be doing in the film. Gunn previously said that filming had concluded in February so this news could’ve been held until just over the weekend or maybe there are some planned shoots with Stallone coming up. Stallone followed up Gunn’s Instagram post with a post of his own that featured a screengrab of “Deadline’s” announcement of the casting news with a caption that read “Working with this incredible Director on this astounding project has made this an amazing year. I am a very lucky man to be surrounded by such talent.” You can check out Stallone’s post below:

Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is set to release on August 6, 2021,  and stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Michael Rooker, Jao Courtney, Storm Reid, Sean Gunn, Peter Capaldi, and Viola Davis. Gunn, who also wrote the screenplay, took inspiration from the ’80s “Suicide Squad” comics and will incorporate new characters into the storyline. Stallone worked with Gunn previously on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2,  in which he played Stakar Ogord, who turns into the hero Starhawk.
