Shazam! easily topped the box office for the second weekend in a row but the real story is the D.O.A. performance of the rebooted Hellboy franchise which already has to go back to the drawing board.
Shazam! grossed an estimated $25.1 million which represents a drop of 53%. That’s pretty much in line where most saw it dropping this weekend and the drop isn’t bad considering Shazam! isn’t a well-known brand and they kept the budget low at $100 million so the film is in very good shape. The domestic total is now at $94.9 million and the film also topped the global box office for the second weekend in a row as it added $35.9 million internationally for an overseas total that now stands at $163.9 million and a global tally reaching $258.8 million.
Debuting in second is not Hellboy but Little with an estimated $15.4 million. I had a feeling Little could pull ahead of Hellboy if the word on the comic book film was bad and that’s exactly what happened. Little is on its way to being a nice little hit for Universal as it cost only $20 million to make and received an encouraging “B+” CinemaScore so word of mouth may give this film some legs.
Third is where we find Hellboy as it grossed an estimated $12 million. That’s the lowest Hellboy opening through three films, off 64% from the series’ previous opening high of $34.5 million, when Universal made Hellboy II a piece of summer 2008 counter-programming. The movies endured a lot of negativity heading into the weekend with awful reviews and news of tension on set during filming that probably tainted the production. The movie received a “C” CinemaScore and it will honestly be an afterthought by the time Avengers: Endgame opens next week.
Falling to fourth is Pet Sematary with an estimated $10 million. Sematary saw the typical horror drop of 59.2% and it could’ve been higher considering that moviegoers seem a bit mixed on the film. The movie has grossed $41.1 million at the domestic box office and internationally, the film added $12.6 million this weekend, pushing its overseas total to $35.7 million for a global tally that now stands at $76.8 million. Sematary cost $21 million to make so Paramount should be pleased with the results and I fully expect more Stephen King re-dos in the future.
Rounding out the top five is Dumbo with an estimated $9.1 million. The film dropped 49.6% in weekend three as it continues to struggle to connect with audiences. The movie should’ve honestly been at $100 million by now but instead, it sits at $89.9 million to date. Some of the domestic misfortunes are being saved by its overseas performance. The film also added another $22 million internationally this weekend for an overseas gross that now totals $177 million and a global tally that stands at $267 million.
