I may have never heard of it, but fans rushed out on Wednesday to see Dragon Ball Super: Broly and it definitely made an impression.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly grossed an estimated $7.06 million yesterday from 1,250 venues leading all films at the box office, and overtaking STXfilm/Lantern’s The Upside for the day ($1.69 million) and the fourth Wednesday of Warner Bros. Aquaman ($1.2 million).
The film is projected for about $15 million over the long MLK weekend, due to extreme frontloading, but the opening is solid no matter how you try to spin it. Kids weren’t out of school, although Dragon Ball is a brand the spans all ages. Also impressive was that Funimation’s theatrical launch yesterday includes 180 digital PLF screens and 56 Imax hubs (the first anime title in the large format). Those venues are for one day only and some theaters are playing Broly once a day, others two times, and some five times.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly‘s opening day blows away the $1.8 million opening weekend of Funimation’s Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ from 2015 at 913 theaters. That film ended its stateside run at $8 million and global at $61.7 million. Fox International has overseas on Broly where it has amassed $57.6 million from 17 territories.
