Season 17 Of So You Think You Can Dance Shelved Due To COVID-19 Concerns

Although So You Think You Can Dance was renewed by Fox some time ago, the network will be shelving the upcoming summer season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The plan is for the show to return next summer.

Although Los Angeles County has given guidelines for productions to resume filming, a rep for Fox said that production on the dance competition series cannot move forward as planned due to health and safety restrictions caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Here is the full statement from the network rep:

“While we were looking forward to its return this summer, we cannot meet the standards we’ve set for viewers and contestants in light of the show’s unique format, intricate production schedule and limited time.”

Preliminary auditions, which began back in March via video submissions, were interrupted due to Covid-19 as well. Some think this gives Fox an out to just cancel the show because, while a fan favorite, it’s not a true ratings behemoth anymore but the network says they’re committed to bringing the show back in the summer of 2021.

In the world of dance shows, NBC’s World of Dance had finished filming all of Season 4, which premiered in late May, while ABC chief Karey Burke said this week that she is “blown away by the ingenuity and the care” with which Dancing With the Stars’ upcoming season is being produced. “I’m really confident in their plan.”
