Netflix has grabbed another mega-producer from network TV. Ryan Murphy has signed an overall deal with the streaming service which could reach as high as $300 million. The deal begins July 1 and is a five-year agreement.
Under the new deal, Murphy and his Ryan Murphy Productions will produce new series and films exclusively at Netflix. Murphy is moving to Netflix, which is also the new home of top broadcast drama showrunner Shonda Rhimes, after a long stint at 20th Century Fox TV. Murphy is one of the biggest names on the talent roster for FOX which makes this a big loss as they’re poised to be acquired by Disney. Apparently, they also offered him a deal but Netflix won out.
All the series Murphy has on air with 20th TV/Fox 21 Studios, will still be overseen by Murphy, at least for the next year. Shows like American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Feud & 9-1-1 won’t be affected and he’ll still oversee his new show Pose, set to premiere on FX.
Sources say he was easily lured by Netflix because of the proposed Disney-Fox pact. Makes me think this union makes some producers fear it will affect their creative freedom.
