The 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards will see a familiar face running the show. It has been announced that Rickey Gervais will take on hosting duties for the fifth time but according to Gervais, this is likely his last hurrah as MC.
“Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse, but this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening.”
The Oscars and Emmys went hostless this year which made for a positive ratings outcome for The Oscars but not much of one for the Emmys. Although Gervais was their ultimate choice once again, it’s being reported that NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press had been looking at a variety of comedians since early this summer to take on the hosting gig, but talk kept coming back to Gervais. After preliminary talks with Gervais went well, a formal offer was made and accepted in the last week or so for Gervais to host one more time.
Gervais hosted the annual Beverly Hilton-based ceremony in 2010, 2011 and 2012 before handing the reigns over to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for three years. He returned in 2016 (after saying he was done hosting and was then followed by NBC late-night hosts Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers in 2017 and 2018. Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Andy Samberg and Killing Eve star and Globes winner Sandra Oh held things down this year.
The 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards will air on January 7, 2020.
