I’m going to start this latest story off with I LOVED Revenge, which ran for four seasons (2011-2015) & 89 episodes on ABC. Even when the series went off the rails at times, I still stuck by it. When the show ended there was talk of a spinoff but that quickly faded & my revenging days appeared to be over…until now.
ABC has decided to reach into its not so recent past & has announced that a Revenge sequel series is in development at the network. The series is in the early stages but it will center on a Latinx lead character & comes from original series producer Temple Hill and ABC Studios, with series creator Mike Kelley and How to Get Away With Murder veteran Joe Fazzio co-writing the script.
The series is being described as a sequel series & not a reboot because the central character, a young Latinx immigrant, will be guided by a character from the original series. The story follows the lead as she arrives in Malibu to take down a Sackler-Esque pharmaceutical dynasty whose greed led to the murder of her biochemist mother, the destruction of her family and a global epidemic. Which character from the original series who will be guiding her, has not been revealed.
Inspired by the Alexandre Dumas novel “The Count of Monte Cristo”, the original Revenge starred Emily VanCamp as a young woman who comes to the Hamptons to exact revenge on a wealthy family who had framed her father. The show was a huge breakout hit for ABC when it premiered in 2011 but its live ratings tapered off in subsequent seasons due to its serialized format but its devoted fanbase made it a significant player in delayed viewing. When Revenge premiered, it became ABC’s highest-rated series in Wednesday’s 10:00 PM slot since Lost’s 2006–2007 season and became the only new series in more than four years to replicate the 18–49 demo ratings success that Lost had in its time slot since leaving the air, scoring a 3.3 demo rating for its series premiere.
