Reel Coming Soon: Last Flag Flying

Amazon Studios has debuted the first trailer for Last Flag Flying, the new film from director Richard Linklater starring Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, Laurence Fishburne, Yul Vazquez, and Cicely Tyson.

In 2003, 30 years after they served together in the Vietnam War, former Navy Corps medic Larry “Doc” Shepherd (Steve Carell) re-unites with ex-Marine Sal Nealon (Bryan Cranston) and Reverend Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) on a different type of mission: to bury Doc’s son, a young Marine killed in the Iraq War. Doc decides to forgo burial at Arlington Cemetery and, with the help of his old buddies, takes the casket on a bittersweet trip up the East Coast to his home in suburban New Hampshire. Along the way, Doc, Sal and Mueller reminisce and come to terms with shared memories of the war that continues to shape their lives.

Last Flag Flying is based on the novel of the same name by Darryl Ponicsan, who wrote it as a sequel to his own The Last Detail, which was made into the classic Jack Nicholson movie in 1973. The character’s names have been changed for the new film, making it more of a spiritual sequel.

Last Flag Flying is the Opening Night selection of the 55th New York Film Festival on September 28, and will be released in select theaters by Amazon Studios and Lionsgate on November 3.
