Reel Box Office Update: Star Wars Dips Day To Day

The Thursday estimates are in and once again three films are top choices for moviegoers although one of them took a larger dip than the rest of the pack.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is still easily the number one movie of the holiday season but it dipped 10.8% versus its Wednesday gross to $19.4 million. At this point, I think the dip is because so many people have seen it at this point and audiences are just spreading the wealth so this drop is nothing to be concerned about. The domestic tally stands at $464.6 million and it should be the highest grossing film of 2017 by the end of the weekend.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle held well Wednesday to Thursday with just a 1% dip to $15 million. The domestic tally is now at $119.2 million and it’s likely that the well-received film will see $200 million by next weekend. Honestly never would’ve called this a few weeks ago.

Pitch Perfect 3 continued to hold well due to its target audience being out of school and dipped only 4.3% versus its Wednesday gross to $6.1 million. The domestic gross comes in at $46.4 million to date and it’s likely to be at about $70 million by the end of the weekend. $100 million is likely the final goal here which would be a nice finish for the third and final installment.

Elsewhere, the box office is moving pretty much how it has been the last few days. The Greatest Showman actually increased 2.5% from its Wednesday gross to $4.7 million. The domestic total is now at $33.5 million and it’s it’s lucky, it will be at $58-60 million by the end of the weekend. I’m still not counting it out but this weekend and the next few as we head into the Martin Luther King holiday frame will go a long way to determine where the film will end up.

The older-skewing films such as Downsizing, All The Money In The World and Father Figures are getting left behind a bit. Downsizing grossed  $1.392 million yesterday and brings its domestic total to a disappointing $12.4 million. All The Money In The World grossed $1.39 million and looks better in comparison because it has only been open since Monday. Its domestic total stands at $7.1 million so far. Lastly, Father Figures is struggling hard with a $1 million gross yesterday and only $9 million to date.

Check back tomorrow as we look at Friday’s numbers and see where the films may stand as we end 2017!
