Reel Box Office Predictions: December 1-3

The weekend after Thanksgiving is usually pretty dismal at the box office as studios prepare to unleash their big guns in the coming weeks for the holiday season. There aren’t any new wide releases opening this weekend so the top three should look similar to last week, albeit with some sizable declines.

Coco should retain the top spot and may drop at least 50% from its 3 day opening last weekend. That decline might seem serious but this weekend always plays like this and in the case of family films mostly, they rebound considerably in the weeks ahead. Coco should maintain the top spot with about $25 million for the weekend.

Justice League dropped nearly 57% in weekend 2 and should see another decline close to 60% in weekend three. These huge drops don’t make its domestic game any better so everyone will be looking to how it holds up internationally moving forward. I predict about $16-17 million this weekend.

The film that should see the smallest decline of the three films is Wonder, which is captivating audiences with its inspirational story. The box office run has exceeded expectations so far and its third weekend should continue to surprise. I’m expecting about a 35% drop in weekend three to $14-15 million

Check back Monday for the final box office results and I think everyone would agree that it’s time to bring on Star Wars to end the box office year off right.
