A Quiet Place turned up at the volume at the box office last night with an impressive start during Thursday night previews with $4.3 million.T
The PG-13 title directed by and starring John Krasinski and wife Emily Blunt started with a figure that blasts away its nearest comparison, 10 Cloverfield Lane, which earned $1.8 million on Thursday before an $8.9 million Friday and a $24.7 million opening. At this level, there’s a good shot A Quiet Place could touch the $30 million I predicted for the weekend. A Quiet Place‘s Thursday night is also above Get Out‘s $1.8 million and that film went on to open to $33.3 million, which means A Quiet Place could surge even higher than what I predicted.
Blockers also got off to an impressive start in Thursday night previews with $1.5 million. That is $500K more than Game Night, the year’s previous R-rated comedy and higher than the Melissa McCarthy 2016 comedy The Boss ($985K) and just under Trainwreck ($1.8 million). Game Night took in $5.5 million on its opening day and $17 million while The Boss made $8 million on its first Friday and $23.5 million over the weekend. Like Game Night, Blockers has an 82% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While Game Night attracted men and women over 25 equally at 35%, there’s interest from the younger demos on Blockers which means it could also surge higher this weekend.
