Ready Player One Wins Easter Weekend At The Box Office

Steven Spielberg showed he can still pull off a blockbuster opening with the release of Ready Player One. The film easily won Easter weekend & came in above tracking.

The film grossed $41.2 million for a first-place finish and has grossed $53.2 million since opening with Wednesday night previews. This is the largest opening weekend for Spielberg since the $100 million debut of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The film received an “A-” CinemaScore which bodes well for word of mouth. The film had a global debut of $181.2 million which is a solid start for a film carrying an estimated budget of $150-170 million.

Debuting in second is Tyler Perry’s Acrimony with $17.1 million. Perry’s serious films sometimes don’t hit but the Taraji P. Henson assist here likely boosted box office. The film received an “A-” CinemaScore which means his fanbase enjoyed it. The film is budgeted at $20 million so this will be a modest hit and another win for Perry.

Black Panther fell to third with $11.2 million. This pushes its domestic take to over $650 million and currently places as the fifth largest domestic release of all-time and will soon top Jurassic World & Titanic to place third on that list.

I Can Only Imagine had another great hold this weekend with an estimated $10.7 million. The film has grossed $55.5 million on a $7 million budget and likely benefited greatly this weekend from Easter moviegoers. It’s also Roadside’s largest domestic release ever, topping the $47.6 million of Manchester by the Sea.

Falling to fifth is Pacific Rim: Uprising with $9.2 million. That’s a hefty drop or $67% & it brings it to a domestic gross of $45.6 million. The real money is coming from overseas markets and that will likely make it somewhat profitable but it’s still a clunker in the states.
