PGA Award Nominations Announced For Film & TV

The Producers Guild Of America has announced their nominations for film and TV and when it comes to film, it may shine a light on potential nominees for Best Picture at The Oscars.

The PGA has chosen to honor the following ten films with nominations: Sam Mendes’ World War I epic 1917, Twentieth Century Fox/Chernin Entertainment’s Ford V Ferrari, Netflix’s The Irishman, Taika Waititi-directed Jojo Rabbit, Sony’s Little Women, Netflix’s Marriage Story, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, Warner Bros’ Joker, Rian Johnson’s Knives Out and Bong Jong Ho’s black comedy thriller Parasite.

The big question is always how will their choices match up with The Oscars. The PGA has about 8,200 members and has matched the Oscar for Best Picture in 21 of its 30 years in terms of the winner. The PGA has been on a roll the last two years when it comes its choice matching the Best Picture Oscar winner as Green Book took home the PGA before ultimately winning the Oscar and the year before that they matched on The Shape of Water as well. In terms of nominees, about three-quarters of the PGA’s nominees end up being Oscar nominees as well.

Making the cut on the TV side includes drama series Big Little Lies (season 2), The Crown (season 3), and HBO’s Game of ThronesSuccession, and Watchmen. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (last year’s comedy winner) is one of the lone repeats from last year while Fleabag and Chernobyl continue their award season rush on the television side as well.

The PGA also followed the current television trend of not acknowledging a single network TV show which adds another nail in network TV’s coffin. It was nice to see the continued support for shows like Schitt’s Creek, which is really getting huge momentum heading into its final season.

The PGA Awards will be presented on January 18 at the Hollywood Palladium. Check out the full list of nominees below:
