New York Film Critics Circle Names The Irishman The Best Film Of 2019

A day after the National Board of Review named The Irishman the best film of the year, the New York Film Critics Circle has followed suit by also bestowing the honor on Martin Scorsese’s mob drama. This is the second consecutive major critics group honor for the Netflix film.

The NYFCC did spread the wealth a bit in some of the major categories. Lupita Nyong’o was named Best Actress for Jordan Peele’s Us & Antonio Banderas was named Best Actor for Pain And Glory. In a bit of a surprise win, Best Director honors went to Josh & Benny Safdie for A24’s Uncut Gems. While the National Board of Review gave Quentin Tarantino Best Director for Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, the NYFCC voted him a winner for Best Screenplay for the film.

Other winners included another win for The Irishman with Joe Pesci winning Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film while Laura Dern won Best Supporting Actress for two films (Marriage Story & Little Women. For Best Foreign Film, my personal favorite film of the year, Parasite, took home the top prize.

As always we need to see where the NYFCC lines up with the Oscars. Last year they chose Netflix’s Roma as Best Picture & it went on to receive 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, but it didn’t ultimately win the top prize. They did match on Best Director & Cinematography last year, however. Last year NYFCC also matched the Oscars for Best Supporting Actress for Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) & Best Animated Film for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

The NYFCC includes critics from daily and weekly newspapers, magazines and online publications & winner will be honored by the NYFCC on January 7. Check out the full list of winners below:
