Meta-horror could be making a comeback. After nearly a decade since its last theatrical outing, it’s being reported that the Scream franchise is getting another film installment.
Reports have surfaced that Gary Barber’s Spyglass Media Group is developing the project. Details are very scarce but Spyglass Media Group being behind the project does make a bit of sense. The Scream rights were recently acquired by Lantern Entertainment along with all other assets owned by Dimension Films. The allegations against Harvey Weinstein drove Dimension into bankruptcy, and thus it seems to have breathed new life into these Dimension properties. Spyglass is remaking Hellraiser with a script by David S. Goyer. Hellraiser happens to be another Dimension property so it makes sense that the company would also get its hands on the Scream franchise. Spyglass Media Group was re-launched as a content company in March by former MGM head Gary Barber, Lantern Entertainment co-presidents Andy Mitchell and Milos Brajovic.
It hasn’t been confirmed whether the new project will follow the original four films, the two continuities within the TV series, or be an entirely new continuity altogether. Scream 1-4, directed by the late Wes Craven, are canon while the TV series followed a different story for the first two seasons on MTV and then took on an even different story for its third season that went on to air on VH-1.
