Netflix is becoming quite the behemoth for original films. 2017 has seen the streaming giant release 34 original movies and according to their chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, there are plans for it to release 80 next year. In a letter to investors, Netflix revealed that it plans to spend $8 billion on content in 2018. This is more than HBO spends on programming in an entire year, which shows how much growth Netflix has had in recent years.
Yep, we said 80! That’s more movies than most of the bigger studios release in a year. According to Box Office Mojo data, most studios average 23 films a year. 2016 saw Sony release the most amount of films with 38 and Disney had the fewest with 13.
Netflix will release more movies than Disney, Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures combined in 2018. They also plan to focus more on the international market, including 30 original anime series like Ajin, Castlevania, and Neo Yokio, along with their first ever Danish show, a post-apocalyptic thriller called The Rain, and its first Swedish show, a crime drama called Quicksand.
Netflix will also continue to explore more deals with other companies, such as its recent deal with Millarworld to bring properties like Kick-Ass, Kingsman and Wanted to its library. They will also be making a larger push in merchandising with Stranger Things themed Christmas sweaters set to hit Target before the end of this month.
