Say What? Rogue One May Not Have Star Wars Signature Opening Crawl

The Star Wars opening crawl is one of those iconic pieces in film history, especially having been a part of all the episodes for years. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed last Friday at Star Wars Celebration Europe in London that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the upcoming standalone film, may not feature that famous crawl.

“You know, we’re in the midst of talking about it, but I don’t think these films will have an opening crawl. I think that’s what we kind of telegraphed at the beginning of the event today.”

One reason for not using the crawl is because they would like to differentiate the standalone films from the main series. Director Gareth Edwards confirmed Kennedy’s thoughts on nixing the crawl.

“I think basically there’s a lot of things that I probably can’t talk about, is probably the safest way to answer that. The idea is this film is supposed to be different than the saga films…the whole crawl of it all — it’s funny people are fascinated on that.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters December 16th.
