Moana Threepeats At Number One While La La Land Opens Big in Limited Release

This weekend was pretty much the calm before the storm that is represented by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opening up in a few days. It’s not a slow weekend at the box office but merely a prelude to what’s going to be a huge few weeks at the box office as the year wraps up.

Moana holds on to the top spot for the third week in a row with an estimated $18.8 million. That’s only a drop of 33.4% from last weekend and it brings its domestic total to $145 million. It has also grossed $238.8 million worldwide and it should continue to play well until Sing starts to take the attention of all the kids out there.

Opening in a solid second is Office Christmas Party with $17.5 million. It’s a solid start but word of mouth has been mixed and reviews weren’t great so I don’t think it will have huge legs moving forward. It should put  up respectable numbers in the end but a part of me thinks some money was left on the table with this one as it could’ve broken out a bit more if the quality of the film was better.

In limited release, La La Land did incredibly well with  $855,000 from only five theaters. That’s a $171,000 per theater average which makes it the tenth largest per theater average of all time and the third largest for a live action film. The film expands to 200 locations this week and expands further just in time for Christmas. This is going to be one to watch as it’s the frontrunner in many categories this award’s season.
