Mission: Impossible – Fallout Spends Second Weekend At Number One

Despite the arrival of three new releases, Mission: Impossible – Fallout maintained its number one position for the second weekend in a row and is well on its way to becoming the biggest film of the franchise at the domestic box office.

Fallout grossed an estimated $35 million which means it dropped a solid 42.8%. Rogue Nation, which also spent a second weekend at number one, dropped 49% in its second outing so Fallout is pacing significantly better than the previous film. The film has grossed $124.4 million to date and with little competition on the action front, Fallout should see some solid legs throughout August which will likely position it to outgross the $215.4 million of Mission: Impossible II and become the biggest film of the franchise on the domestic front. Internationally, where these movies really thrive, the film added $76 million this weekend and brought its worldwide total to $329.5 million and it still has openings in Italy and China to boost that total.

Our first new release, Christopher Robin, lands in second with an estimated $25 million. That’s below the $30 million it was tracking at heading into the weekend but it’s not a horrible outcome. Reviews were decent (68% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing) but oddly the film wasn’t screened for critics. The Winnie The Pooh brand still holds some weight and being the fresh family film in the market should ensure decent legs, which it will need to recoup its $75 million budget.

The Spy Who Dumped Me debuts in third place with an estimated $12.3 million. Bad reviews handicapped this one (37% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing) and an uneven tone between action and comedy likely divided audiences. Kate McKinnon deserves a big hit and she’s still searching for one. Much like her other films that have underperformed, critics still give her glowing reviews so I’m still waiting for her big moment on the big screen. This film carries a $40 million budget and with a so-so “B” CinemaScore, it’s not going to have the legs necessary to match its production budget.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again falls to fourth with an estimated $9 million. The film dropped 39.8% and has grossed $91.3 million domestically. Oddly enough, it’s ahead of the first film at the same point of release but heftier drops won’t allow it to match what the first film grossed. That being said, the sequel is still headed for at least $120 million on a $75 million budget, making the sequel a solid investment. The film has also performed well overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $230 million.

Rounding out the top five is The Equalizer 2 with an estimated $8.8 million. That’s a drop of 37% as it brings its domestic total to $79.8 million. The sequel is pacing at the same rate as the first film at this point of the release and now the question is can the sequel leg it out to match the $101.5 million gross of the original? It’s possible, but it will be very close.
