Mindhunter Season 3 In Question After Cast Options Expire

Mindhunter season two launched five months ago on Netflix and fans have been eagerly awaiting word on what another season might hold. The mind behind the series, David Fischer, is busy directing his first film for Netflix so there has been no movement on season 3 whatsoever. Due to this, Netflix let the options of the cast, led by stars Holt McCallany and Jonathan Groff, lapse last month which further raises the possibility that we may have seen the last of Mindhunter, at least with it current performers.

A Netflix spokesperson had this to say about the current state of Mindhunter:

“David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots. He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”

There is a good news/bad news scenario at play here. The good news is reports suggest that the cast really love working with Fincher, particularly on this project. The bad news is, while most of them would likely come back if they could, it’s highly likely that they may be tied to other series when the time comes to revisit a third season.

Mindhunter was a unique show for Netflix. The series popped up on a few binge reports during its first season but season two was said to have a quieter run, despite the fact that Netflix doesn’t officially release viewership information. The series did build a bit of a following but it didn’t became a brand defining hit like Stranger Things or Ozark.

Fincher does have respect and stature at Netflix because he brought them their first big homegrown original series when he helped launch House of Cards. This is a big reason the streamer is open to discussing a third season but as of now, there has been no meaningful communication between Netflix, the director and the cast about a third season.
