Maze Runner: The Death Cure Races To Number One

The January box office came to a close with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle giving up the top spot after three straight weeks at number one.

Claiming bragging rights this weekend is Maze Runner: The Death Cure, which grossed an estimated $23.5 million. The debut is $7 million behind the previous film’s opening and $9 million short of the opening of the first film in the franchise. The tracking had it debuting in this range though and with the YA craze having subsided since these films began rolling out, this isn’t a horrible start for the $62 million film (meaning it won’t close out the franchise with a whimper like The Divergent series which abandoned plans to finish the second part of their finale due to poor box office).  Internationally, The Death Cure began playing overseas last weekend, bringing in $15 million from four markets. This weekend it added nearly 70 markets and brought in an estimated $62.7 million. This pushes its worldwide gross to $105.5 million which is how the film will make up for a lighter showing domestically.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continued to amaze, dropping just 15.9% to $16.4 million for second place. The film climbs over $338 million domestically and honestly, seems like it’s not slowing down. This is a rarity for a family film released during the crowded holiday season at this point in its run to still be performing solidly. Is $400 million possibly in the cards? Only time will tell but we do have President’s Day Weekend around the corner which could give it the little extra boost to do so.

Debuting in third is Hostiles with an estimated $10.2 million. The film exceeded some tracking a bit and seemed to resonate with older audiences. The film opened in limited release back in December and was originally thought to be an Oscar contender but that was not meant to be. This is still an impressive start for a genre that isn’t always reliable so the studio has to be happy with where this started.

The Greatest Showman is still riding great word of mouth with a slim 10.8% decline to $9.5 million. In its sixth weekend, it’s actually grossing more than it did on its opening weekend. The film has grossed $126.4 million on an $84 million budget and still has more to make if it continues with this small declines weekend to weekend.

Rounding out the top five is The Post with $8.8 million. The film fell 24.5% which is better than the 39% decline from its second weekend. The film has grossed $58.5 million so far and should be a choice for audiences thanks to its Oscar nominations for Best Picture & Best Actress (Meryl Streep).
