Margot Robbie is reteaming with the writer of Birds of Prey, Christina Hodson, on a female-driven Pirates of the Caribbean movie at Disney. If the deal fully comes together, Hodson would write the script, and Robbie will star.
The plan is for the film to be a standalone project in the Pirates franchise rather than a spinoff or a sequel. The project will be separate from the Pirates reboot that emerged last fall with Emmy-winning Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott, who co-wrote the first four Pirates films, crafting a story for a new movie. The talks on this are still early but seem promising considering the working relationship between Hodson and Robbie.
Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, the Robbie-fronted, Hodson-penned spinoff of Warner Bros and DC’s Suicide Squad franchise, has grossed $201.9 million worldwide since its February 7, 2020 opening. The film was considered an underwhelming box office performer but the movie was well-received by critics and fans that took the time to check the film out. As for the Pirates franchise, which pushed Johnny Depp to a whole new level of stardom, the Disney series of films have grossed $4.5 billion worldwide.
