Los Angeles Film Critics Association Names Parasite Best Film Of 2019

It has been a great few days for Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite. The film has been collecting numerous Best Picture of the Year wins from various critics circles and it also earned a Best Ensemble nomination from SAG this morning. The film can now odd another critics award to its mantle because The Los Angeles Film Critics Association has also named the film the Best Picture of the year.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association went a little out of the box for its choice for Best Actor. While Antonio Banderas has been a part of the conversation, Adam Driver has been taking many of the critic’s awards for his role in Marriage Story. LAFCA went with Antonio Banderas for the honor for his critically acclaimed turn in Pedro Almodovar’s Pain And Glory. In a bit of a surprise turn, that film was also given Best Foreign Language film honors while Parasite, which has been sweeping this category, wasn’t even a runner-up.

Jennifer Lopez has been pulling nominations for her supporting turn in Hustlers this awards season but LAFCA gave her win for Best Supporting Actress. The Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association also gave her a win in this category while the comeback performance has also earned her nominations from the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, Critics Choice Awards and Spirit Independent Awards. In terms of Oscar, it’s coming down to Lopez, Laura Dern or Kathy Bates but Lopez inclusion in the race has certainly made this category more exciting than it would’ve been without her.

LAFAC also made offbeat choices in Lead Actress and Supporting Actor. Mary Kay Place won Best Actress for Diane while Song Kang-ho took Best Supporting Actor for Parasite. You likely won’t see these two vying for the Oscar in their respective categories.
