Hilary Duff delivered some devastating news to Lizzie McGuire fans. The reboot that set up at Disney+, has officially been scrapped. This comes after the series began shooting and became the subject of creative differences between the show’s creator, Duff, and the streamer.
The actress made the announcement on her Instagram post that essentially said the project “isn’t going to happen.” Despite this, Duff’s post shows that she would’ve fought for telling the character’s story if it reflected where she would be at this current stage in her life. The reimagined version of Lizzie McGuire was a sequel to the 2000s Disney Channel series. Duff was reprising her title character as a 30-year-old millennial navigating life in New York City. The project seemed like a sure thing but the original series’ creator Terri Minsky exited the series over creative differences with Disney+ and that prompted Duff to plead with Disney to move the show to Hulu because it could be a bit more adult. Apparently, Disney took issue with the show exploring more adult themes. A Disney spokeswoman had this to say about the show being scrapped:
“Lizzie McGuire fans have high expectations for any new stories. Unless and until we are confident we can meet those expectations, we’ve decided to hold off and today, we informed the cast’s representatives that we are not moving forward with the planned series.”
