I thought Hobbs & Shaw had to worry about relinquishing the top spot to Angry Birds 2 but after Thursday night previews, they might have to worry about the Good Boys.
Good Boys grossed an impressive $2.1 million in Thursday night previews at 2,600 theaters which began at 7 PM. Good Boys was one of the films in my predictions I said could overperform and it looks like it just might. Comparing it to other R-rated films for the 18-34 demographic, Good Boys’ Thursday is higher than 2018’s Blockers ($1.5 million) and just under the R-rated 2016 film Sausage Party ($3.25 million). Good Boys take is also higher than Tag‘s $1.3 million last summer and 2018’s Game Night ($1 million). The Thursday night showing I saw last night was completely sold out so it bodes well for where the film may be headed. The film cost $20 million to make and the preview numbers suggest an opening in that range if it isn’t too frontloaded.
47 Meters Down: Uncaged also got started in Thursday night previews with $516,000 at 2,015 locations, also from showtimes that began at 7 PM. The number isn’t really too spectacular but a $9-11 million opening could still be in play.
