Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Rules The Box Office For A Second Weekend

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom maintained the number one position for a second weekend and newcomers Sicario: Day of the Soldado & Uncle Drew provided solid counterprogramming.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom grossed an estimated $60 million over the weekend which represents a drop of 59.5%. This drop may seem steep but it was pretty much expected and the film is still putting up solid business with a gross just shy of $265 million at the domestic box office. Overseas the film is still going strong with a weekend gross of $56.1 million which brings its worldwide total to $932.4 million. This is going to be another $1 billion grosser when it’s all said and done so Universal must be happy with the results.

Incredibles 2 maintained its second place position with an estimated $45.5 million. That’s a drop of 43.3% as the animated sequel has now grossed $439.7 million. At this point, it’s the second highest grossing Pixar movie of all-time and third highest grossing animated film of all-time as well.

Overperforming in third is Sicario: Day of the Soldado with $19 million. The film actually opened higher than Sicario which came out of the gate with $12.1 million but also saw impressive legs on its way to $46.8 million on a $30 million budget. This is a rare dramatic thriller sequel and an opening like this has to be considered a win for Sony. The film is 62% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and it scored a “B” CinemaScore so it will be interesting to see if it can match or exceed the final gross of the first film.

Also scoring in the counterprogramming department is Uncle Drew with $15.5 million. This a solid start for a film that was spawned from Pepsi commercials but I imagine that the film will be extremely frontloaded and could see a hefty drop, even with the holiday weekend approaching. The film carries a $20 million budget and scored an “A” CinemaScore so this will be a modest hit at the end of the day.

Rounding out the top five is Ocean’s Eight with an estimated $8 million. The film had another solid hold with a drop of only 30.4% which is showing that the demographic is really responding to it. The domestic total is just shy of $115 million and mid-week it will top Ocean’s Thirteen and likely next weekend it will top Ocean’s Twelve to become the second highest grossing film of the franchise. The movie has also put up solid numbers overseas with a worldwide total of $209.7 million on a $70 million budget.
