Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle Threepeats At Number One

I had no clue I’d be covering Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and its box office performance a month after its release but here we are! The film has taken the top spot again at the box office for the third weekend in a row.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle grossed an estimated $20 million and has continued to keep its weekly declines below 30% (this week it fell 28.7%). This is an excellent hold, even for a family film and now the movie has a domestic haul of $316.9 million. Internationally the film is also staying strong, adding anotherĀ $32.6 million to its international take. The worldwide total is now at $767.8 million.

There were a couple of newcomers at the box office and both of them performed admirably. Landing in second is 12 Strong with an estimated $16.5 million. The film received an “A” CinemaScore and could be a movie that older audiences carry to a decent finish due to positive word of mouth. Tracking had the film in the $15 million range so this opening has to be considered a win.

In third place is our next new opener and it actually outperformed its tracking by a significant margin. Den of Thieves grossed an estimated $15.3 million and completely demolished its tracking which had it pegged for an $8-9 million opening. The film received a “B+” CinemaScore which is good for a film like this. The movie did skew heavily male which isn’t much of a surprise considering the subject matter. The film may not have a huge life at the box office, but this opening is encouraging for a decent finish.

Falling to fourth is The Post with an estimated $12.1 million. The domestic total now stands at $45 million and it will continue to be a popular option for adults seeking a more prestige option at the movies. If it scores some significant Oscar nominations, the film should continue to perform well as we head to the Oscars in March.

Round out the top five is The Greatest Showman with an estimated $11 million. The film fell a slim 12% weekend to weekend and it’s a shining example of what good word of mouth can do. Keep in mind that this film opened to a slim $8.8 million before Christmas and it has turned that into a running total that has reached $113.4 million. The film doesn’t seem to be slowing down either so it’s still one to watch as we wait and see where it will end up.
