Jumanji Back On Top During Slow Super Bowl Weekend

With attention on the big game on Sunday, the box office took a little bit of a hit which allowed Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle to jump back to the top of the box office.

The film grossed $10.9 million this weekend and dropped 32.3% from the previous weekend. The film has made $352.5 million to date which is just amazing for a film that was released back in December. The film has ridden some pretty good word of mouth and has become one the biggest box office surprises in recent memory. Internationally, Jumanji added an estimated $12.6 million this weekend from 93 markets, bringing the film’s international total to $503.1 million for a global tally topping $855 million.

Dropping to second is a film that I thought would hold onto the top spot. Maze Runner: The Death Cure grossed $10.4 million and dropped a steep 56.7% week to week. The domestic total stands at $40 million and while it may seem like the film is failing bit, its international grosses are ensuring that this will be a hit in the end. The film ruled the international box office again this weekend and brought in $35.2 million from 80 markets. The $62 million film has now grossed $142.9 million worldwide.

Debuting in third is Winchester which grossed $9.3 million. This is pretty much where most thought it would land and from here it’s probably going to be a quick exit from theaters. The film scored a “B-” CinemaScore which isn’t too bad for a horror film but this one skewed a bit older due to its star Helen Mirren and didn’t really bring in a huge young audience.

In fourth is the other big word of mouth sensation from December, The Greatest Showman. The film grossed $7.6 million and dropped a slim 19.3% week to week. The film has grossed $137.3 million to date and seems like a lock for at least $150 million before it’s all said in done. Keep in mind this film opened to just $8.8 million back in December and looked like it wouldn’t come close to its $84 million budget and now it has been a shining example of being a true crowd pleaser. The film has also grossed $153 million from overseas markets.

Rounding out the top five is The Post with $5.2 million. The film dropped 42.7% week to week and some of these drops do seems a tad larger than anticipated but I still think it will carry on with some momentum as we head to the Oscars on March 4. The film has grossed $67.2 million on a $50 million budget so it’s still in a good position to turn a profit, although it seems a  little bit of money is being left on the table here.
