Julia Stiles is returning to horror with a role in the prequel, Orphan: First Kill, and Isabelle Fuhrman, who starred as Esther in the 2009 feature, is returning to the role that has gone on to become iconic in some horror circles.
The prequel comes to us via Entertainment One (eOne) and Dark Castle. William Brent Bell (The Boy franchise) is already shooting Orphan: First Kill in Winnipeg, Canada, and in order to help Fuhrman bring her character to life again, since the actress is over 10 years older than she was in 2009, filmmakers are utilizing a combination of forced perspective shooting and a world-class makeup team. According to the film’s synopsis, “In Orphan: First Kill, written by David Coggeshall, Leena Klammer orchestrates a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility and travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family. But Leena’s new life as “Esther” comes with an unexpected wrinkle and pits her against a mother who will protect her family at any cost.”
In the original Orphan, the plot centered on a couple who, after the death of their unborn child, adopt a mysterious nine-year-old girl. In addition to Fuhrman, the film also starred Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, C.C.H. Pounder, and Jimmy Bennett. The film received mixed reviews from critics but they did praise the acting of Farmiga and Fuhrman and moviegoers got a kick out of the film with the movie pulling in $78 million worldwide on a $20 million budget.
Stiles has dabbled with horror before, playing the female lead in The Omen remake back in 2006. The actress also had a role on Dexter where she received a Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy nomination. Her other notable film credits include 10 Things I Hate About You, Save The Last Dance, The Bourne Franchise, Silver Linings Playbook & Hustlers. She currently stars in and serves as Executive Producer on the series Riviera. As for Fuhrman, her past credits include The Hunger Games and Showtime’s Masters of Sex. She is starring in Screen Gems’ Escape Room 2 set for a 2021 theatrical release.
