Homecoming has been one of the best-received series to hit streaming & earned Amazon Golden Globe nominations in the process but its star Julia Roberts, who also earned a nomination for her turn on the series, will not be returning for the already greenlit second season.
Roberts’ initial deal for Homecoming — the star’s first TV series regular role — was for a one-season commitment based purely on the Amazon drama’s creative storyline. The actress will still remain involved as an executive producer alongside showrunner Sam Esmail on the Universal Cable Productions series that landed at Amazon with a two-season commitment.
It’s also unclear if there will be any other major cast departures for season two or if any of the other freshman stars — including Stephan James, Bobby Cannavale, Shea Whigham, Alex Karpovsky and Sissy Spacek — will return. At this point, no comments have been made about anyone’s status as of this moment.
Homecoming season 2 has to navigate Roberts’ departure as it has also deviated a bit from the Gimlet Media podcast on which it is based. In the podcast version of the story, Heidi (Julia Roberts) spends the entire second season searching in vain for Walter (Stephan James) but this already took place during the streamers first season.
Despite these changes, season 2 is still a go and will likely further explore the storyline that was teased in the season one finale post-credits scene that I won’t spoil here.
Homecoming is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video
