After speculation as to whether or not the film would be made, The Joker origin movie is officially a go at Warner Bros.
Joaquin Phoenix recently finalized his deal to star clown prince of crime with shooting set to begin in September in New York. The Hangover directed Todd Phillips is set to helm the film and co-wrote the script, which Warner Bros. stated,
“exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”
The Joker stand-alone film is meant to be different from other comic book superhero movies. The project’s budget is in the $55 million range, significantly lower than the standard budget for most comic book films.
The upcoming stand-alone is also meant to be darker and more experimental in tone and content.
The film may be ready to release as early as late 2019, and this film does not effect the plans that Warners has for a possible second Joker movie in the works as Jared Leto, who played the character in Suicide Squad.
