The end may be near the Jane The Virgin. The series’ star, Gina Rodriguez, made comments at a recent event that indicates next season, its fifth, could be its last.
The actress, who this season made her directorial debut on The CW soap, said that she hoped to “do more [directing] next year — in our final season.” The CW hasn’t announced renewals or cancelations just yet but as a producer on the series she could be privy to decisions that have yet to be announced.
Jane the Virgin, a critical favorite, has never been a ratings winner. Jane is among the lowest-rated shows on broadcast TV, most recently collecting 600,000 same-day viewers and a 0.2 in the key adults 18-49 demographic. But what it lacks in overall viewership, it makes up for in awards conversation around star Rodriguez. She won The CW’s first-ever Golden Globe for her role as Jane. Perhaps even more important than that, Rodriguez has used press opportunities for the series as a platform to encourage networks and writers alike to create better roles for Latino actresses.
CW president Mark Pedowitz has always been vocal about his support for the show and Gina Rodriguez. The series was picked up for a more limited 13-episode fourth season, which has allowed Rodriguez an opportunity to explore other projects. Rodriguez also has an overall deal with Jane producers CBS Television Studios and is developing a few other projects for the small screen.
