We may be in the August dumps at the box office right now but the weekend of September 6 should see a nice little surge when It: Chapter Two opens. The horror sequel has entered box office tracking and it’s poised for a scary good debut.
The first film opened to $123.4 million and became the biggest opening for a horror film in the process. Chapter Two is tracking at $120 million+ which means the sequel will be on par with the original. Some think if reviews are solid and word of mouth is on the level of its predecessor, there’s a chance it could surge a bit higher which would be remarkable to see a horror film opening in such blockbuster territory.
Warner Bros. is hoping that It: Chapter Two plays like the first film. It didn’t really perform like a genre film at the box office. The film opened strong and had legs in the weeks ahead and it even played to a wide demographic. Warner Bros. was smart to release the film in September which is widely believed to be a dumping ground for subpar films but It proved that wrong in spades and that’s the hope for the sequel, which takes advantage of the post-Labor Day period.
It: Chapter Two follows the Loser Club as adults as they grapple with being haunted once again by Pennywise, the evil clown who fed on their fear as children. Andy Muschietti returns to direct.
It: Chapter Two opens on September 6.
