Incredibles 2 Heroic With Record-Breaking $180 Million Opening

14 years of pent up anticipation lead Incredibles 2 to a record-breaking opening weekend that topped even the most aggressive box office tracking for the film.

Incredibles 2 grossed an estimated $180 million over the weekend, making it the largest animated opening of all-time. The previous record holder was another Pixar release, Finding Dory, which opened to $135.1 million. The opening ranks as the eighth largest of all-time, topping the $179.1 million opening of Captain America: Civil War. It should also be noted that Disney owns 9 of the top ten openings of all-time with the lone non-Disney film being Jurassic World. The animated sequel scored an “A+” CinemaScore so the legs on this one should be huge as its really the only significant family film in play for awhile.

Dropping to second is Ocean’s 8 with $19.5 million. The 53% drop is a tad higher than expected but Tag had a large female turnout too and I’m sure Incredibles 2 was a factor as well. The target demo did carry this film to solid weekday numbers last week and that should continue in the coming weeks. The film has grossed just shy of $80 million domestically & $116 million worldwide, and it still has plenty of markets to open in. The budget was manageable at $70 million so Ocean’s 9 is likely headed our way.

Tag debuts in third with an estimated $14.6 million and it’s a good but not spectacular start. This was promoted as counterprogramming for dudes but the audience skewed heavily female at 51%. The film cost $28 million to make & received an encouraging “B+” CinemaScore so it should do some modest business moving forward.

Solo: A Star Wars Story earned $9 million in fourth place & had a softer drop this week of 42.3%. The film has grossed $192.8 million and will see $200 million next week but it’s well below its $250-300 million budget. It’s not much of a player overseas either with only $339.5 million worldwide.

Rounding out the top five is Deadpool 2 with $8.8 million. The film dropped 37.8% and has had some impressive holds the last few weeks. The film has grossed $294.6 million & is just $10.5 million shy of $700 million worldwide.
