How I Met Your Mother Spinoff Gets New Writers

A spinoff for CBS hit comedy How I Met Your Mother has been in the works for a few years, even before the series ended its run in 2014 including an attempt to start the show during its final season. The spec script for How I Met Your Dad was originally written by This is Us co-executive producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Given the show’s success on NBC, they’re no longer available to run the development of the HIMYM spinoff leaving CBS’s parent company, 20th Century Fox, no choice but to look for new writers.

Fox chairwoman Dana Walden told Deadline that the studio will try to develop the spinoff further with different writers and that previous ideas will not be carried over. “They will be starting from scratch,” she said of the new effort, potentially for next season. “It’s one that’s been slowly cooked. If it’s the right idea the right execution, we’ll take that.”
