Amazon Will Self Distribute Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel

Woody Allen’s new film, Wonder Wheel, will be closing the 54th New York Film Festival. Amazon Studios is moving ahead with its self-distribution of the film. With Wonder Wheel, Amazon joins smaller companies like Annapurna Picture, who are attempting to increase staff and disrupt the norm in order to compete with more established studios.

After the success of 2016’s Manchester by the Sea including taking home multiple Oscars including Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay, Amazon is setting its sights on another Oscar campaign for Wonder Wheel. After the film closes NYFF, the studio is planning to release the film on December 1st, 2017. Wonder Wheel is a period drama set in New York in the 1950s written and directed by Allen. The film is set in an amusement park in Coney Island in Brooklyn.
