Glass Shatters The Number One Spot At The Box Office

As expected, Glass nabbed the number one spot at the box office over the weekend, although it did come in a bit below where tracking was indicating it would land.

Glass grossed an estimated $40.5 million over the weekend and is expected to gross about $47 million after today’s holiday box office is included. The performance is a bit shy of the studio’s $50 million expectations, but the three-day already more than doubles the film’s reported $20 million budget. The film ranks as the fourth largest January opening of all-time and, if estimates hold, it should rank as the third largest opening for MLK weekend. The film came in a bit ahead of Split’s $40 million opening and ranked a little lower in terms of CinemaScore (“B” versus “B+” for Split). It may be hard to believe given how well-received it is now but Unbreakable opened to a “C” CinemaScore back in 2000. Internationally, Glass grossed $48.5 million this weekend from 55 markets. Leading the way was Russia with an estimated $5.2 million followed by Mexico ($4.5 million), UK ($4.3 million), France ($3.4 million), Korea ($2.8 million), Germany ($2.8 million), Australia ($2.4 million), Italy ($2.1 million), Spain ($2.0 million), Brazil ($1.5m million) and Indonesia ($1.5 million).

Falling to second is The Upside which held well with an estimated $15 million, down just 26.3% from its number one opening last weekend. The studio anticipates the film will top $19.5 million over the 4-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend for a domestic total just shy of $48 million after 11 days in release. Word of mouth is truly carrying this one and it’s connecting with audiences despite the mixed reviews.

In third place, we have Aquaman, with an estimated $10.1 million. The film is down 41.4% but that’s still good considering the added competition from Glass. Aquaman has grossed $304.1 million to date and the film also added $14.3 million from 79 overseas markets this weekend, bringing the international total to $759.1 million for a global tally of $1.06 billion, just a little over $21 million shy of The Dark Knight Rises.

Debuting surprisingly well in fourth place is Dragon Ball Super: Broly with an estimated $9.7 million. The film got off to an amazing start on Wednesday when it grossed $7.06 million its opening day. Since Wednesday, the film has grossed $20.2 million and Internationally, Dragon Ball is entering its seventh week in release and does so with an estimated $5.3 million from 18 markets for an international total that now stands at $65.8 million. The film’s top market is Japan with $33.3 million followed by Mexico where the film is in its second weekend and has brought in $9.5 million so far.

Rounding out the top five is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse with an estimated $7.5 million, down just 16.3% from the previous weekend. The film is having an amazing run and has grossed $158.5 million to date.  Internationally, the film added another $4.7 million this weekend, pushing its worldwide total over $322 million.
