Ghostbusters: Afterlife is on the move again. Originally slated for release over the summer, the Ghostbusters sequel was then moved to March 2021 due to the pandemic but now its new release schedule has it sharing a date with the arrival of the original film.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife will now be released on June 11, 2021, which will be the same weekend as the first Ghostbusters film was when it was released in 1984. It will be 37 years between films so the year isn’t a real milestone but a summer release, further away from the fallout from the pandemic will likely be better for the film, at least that is what Sony Pictures is hoping. Directed by Jason Reitman and produced by his father, and original Ghostbusters director, Ivan Reitman, the film stars Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Annie Potts, Ernie Hudson, and Paul Rudd. The latest continuation of the franchise centers on a single mom and her two kids who arrive in a small town and begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.
Sony Pictures also took the time to date its sequel to Don’t Breathe, which will open August 13, 2021. The first film, which was released the same month in 2016, was a surprise hit and grossed $157.8 million at the global box office. Stephen Lang will be returning as The Blind Man and Rodo Sayagues co-wrote the script alongside the original film’s director Fede Álvarez and is making his directorial debut on the project.
