Back in October, I was provided an opportunity to screen Ghostbusters: Afterlife and from that initial viewing, I had a feeling that the film would be a big hit at the box office upon release and by the weekend numbers, it looks as though I was right. Ghostbusters: Afterlife made its debut over the weekend and it exceeded its early tracking numbers. The highly anticipated sequel grossed $44 million over the weekend which was well ahead of the $30-35 million the film was tracking at ahead of the weekend. Despite it’s surprising mediocre Rotten Tomatoes score, the film has been a hit with fans as it sports a 96% audience score and A- cinemascore respectively.
Coming in second place is Marvel’s Eternals with a gross of $10.8 million which is a 60% drop. In third place, we find Clifford The Big Red Dog with a gross of $8.1 million. The biggest disappointment comes in the form of Oscar hopeful, King Richard which grossed 5.7 million in opening weekend. Despite the low number, the film is currently streaming on HBO Max, so this may be a film folks chose to watch at home.
