Frozen 2, Knives Out & Queen & Slim Score On Thanksgiving Eve

Happy Thanksgiving! Before you begin your day with family and friends, check out this quick box office update on three films that are definitely scoring so far ahead of the holiday.

Frozen 2 continued its box office dominance yesterday with a gross of $23.78 million. The gross allows it to claim the best day before Thanksgiving gross of all-time, besting Hunger Games: Catching Fire which grossed $20.8 million. In terms of animated films, the day ranks second behind  Despicable Me 2 ($35 million) back in July 2013. In terms of any Wednesday during the month of November, it’s second behind Matrix Revolutions’ opening day ($24.3 million) back in 2003. BTW, Frozen 2 is now tracking for a 5-day gross of $135 million for its second weekend which will give it the best 5-day Thanksgiving opening of all-time, beating the record set by, you guessed it, Frozen, back in 2013. Frozen 2 should perform admirably today once families are done stuffing their faces and even though Thanksgiving Day sees a decline before rebounding the rest of the weekend, Frozen 2 will definitely see solid earnings today.

Knives Out, after grossing $3.7 million in Tuesday night previews, kicked off its full wide day with a gross of $8.4 million. It’s a stellar start for the critically-acclaimed whodunit, which is now besting its $25 million 5-day tracking for a potential take of $35-40 million at its current rate. Audiences like Knives Out too, granting it an “A-” CinemaScore which indicates a strong weekend ahead.

Queen & Slim got started in Wednesday previews before going wide today with a gross of $1.7 million. We’ll have a better idea of where it’s headed after today but all signs point to it also besting its 5-day tracking of $10-12 million. Queen & Slim also scored an “A-” CinemaScore so it’s looking like a remarkable time at the movies this weekend.
